Kuwait 'unhappiest' in Middle East region |

KUWAIT: In recently released international report that lists countries worldwide according to the happiness levels, Kuwait was placed at the bottom in the Middle East region. It was also ranked the least among all other Arab countries. On a global scale, Kuwait ranked 128th just 15 places above Zimbabwe, the unhappiest country in the world. The report called 'Happy Planet Index' (HPI) was compiled by the New Economic Foundation (NEF), a UK based organization, that aims to "challenge the mainstream thinki
ng on economic, environment and social issues," the organization's website information page states.
The report, however, measures HPI according to indicators such as life expectancy, life satisfaction, and ecological footprint. The latter serves as a defining factor that gauges the advancement societies make towards achieving the balance between lower carbon emissions and a well-rounded lifestyle.
The NEF does challenges the common notion that the GDP is a good enough indicator to measure countries' development. Arguing that "a government that took GDP too seriously would be pleased to see people paying for things that are normally done for free, such as domestic labor - as this would increase GDP growth. It would measure, as a positive, wars that are required the manufacture and sale of military equipment, the building and maintenance of prisons, or the increased rate of divorces requiring expensiv
e legal services," the report adds.
Some of the results indeed challenge the notion that GDP is a satisfactory indicator of a nation's well-being. Latin American countries such as Costa Rica, the leading country in the overall index results, with a life expectancy of 78.5 years, has a GDP per capita of $10,180 when compared to Kuwait's life-expectancy of 77.3 years with a GDP per capita of $26,321 that places it in 34th place with a GDP per capita that occupies the 22nd position.
In the area of life satisfaction , Kuwait is placed in 50th position. Scoring 6.7 out on a scale of 10 points, Kuwait is placed fourth in the Arab world behind KSA, UAE and Egypt, and occupies the fifth spot in the Middle East. Interestingly, Israel has been placed ahead of Egypt in the ranking.
The third area, ecological footprint, is where Kuwait takes a nose-dive. "To achieve one-planet living, a country must keep its ecological footprint below the level that corresponds to its fair share given the world's current bio-capacity and population - 2.1 global hectares (gha) as set in the year 2005.
In this segment, Kuwait fares the poorest among four countries in the world behind Luxemburg, UAE, and USA, with an ecological footprint of 8.9 global hectares, compared to only 1.7 gha in Egypt, the happiest Arab country, according to the report.
A happy planet? Perhaps not. Looking at the world's population as a whole, the mean life expectancy is just 68.3 years. Life satisfaction is only 6.1 and we are overshooting our ecological limits with a mean footprint of 2.4 gha. The planet's overall HPI score of 49 out of 100 reflects the fact that humanity as a whole has much to change if we are to live long, happy lives that do not cost the Earth," the report concludes.

KUWAIT: The Aware Center held an informative lecture in which Brig Gen Yahya Al-Saleh from the Ministry of Interior provided useful information for expats living in Kuwait. Many expats in Kuwait face problems and become victims of circumstances because of their lack of knowledge. The first advice that he gave expats is to carry their original identification documents with them at all times, especially the visitors.
Many expats only carry a copy of their entry visas, which does not feature a photograph of that person. This isn't enough, hence they should also carry their passports or at least an original ID of their country of residence along with the visa copies," advised Al-Saleh. Many visitors also drive around Kuwait without holding valid driving licenses. "Visitors driving in Kuwait should possess valid international driving licenses. If their stays exceed three months, then they should obtain a valid Kuwaiti dr
iving license," he added.
Some visitors also express surprise at being arrested by the traffic police for committing traffic violations. Clarifying this fact, he said, "Any expat will be arrested and detained if he or she commits any serious traffic violations like crossing red traffic signals, driving at high speeds above 160km/h, or even reckless driving," he added. Inability to speak the local language can also cause an impediment for expats who don't speak Arabic.
Not all policemen in Kuwait speak English. So sometimes misunderstandings could arise between the police and the expatriate motorists. They might use some inappropriate words that they picked up on TV, which in fact might be impolite or offensive. This might offend the expats and could cause conflicts," Al-Saleh said.
Consuming alcohol is strictly forbidden in Kuwait. "Motorists are strictly advised not to drive while under the influence of alcohol even if consumed in small quantities. I advise anyone who has had a drink to stay at home as it's safer for him and others. If caught drunk while driving or even while walking in public, they will be arrested," he cautioned.
He also gave an important advice to drivers, saying, "I'm sure most of you respect the maximum speed permitted while driving and observe the 120 km/h limit. However I caution all those driving at that speed in the fast lane to move aside and give right of way to oncoming cars driving at faster speeds. Such drivers might have something really important to do, or they could be simply crazy or even drunk. So to avoid problems, I advise motorists driving at slower speeds to avoid driving in the fast tracks.
He also urged neighbors to mingle socially and be tolerant of each other saying, "In Kuwait the social and family way of living are very important, which is why families visit each other frequently. During such social visits one might find cars parked outside their houses or residential buildings as the visitors usually fail to find parking places. Be tolerant towards them. One should also respect your neighbors' right to privacy and peace and not disturb them by playing blaring music and even try to contr
ol your pet dog's consistent barking," he pointed out.
Al-Saleh also spoke about the Arab and Islamic traditions followed in Kuwait and reminded people and women in particular to dress decently. "If a lady wears short and sexy outfits in this country, she can't blame the young guy for harassing her," he said.
The holy month of Ramadan is almost at our doorstep and this month in particular has some special and religious traditions that have to be followed. People are not allowed to eat, drink or smoke in public during the fasting time which is from sunrise to sunset. Anybody defying the orders will be penalized, and in some cases even arrested. You can eat, drink or smoke in the privacy of your houses," Al-Saleh concluded.

KUWAIT: In a surprise move aimed at fostering tourism, Kuwait's government announced yesterday that alcohol would be legalised in Kuwait starting May 25 after more than 40 years of prohibition. Alcohol will be available only in five star establishments or at state liquor outlets and sold only to non-Muslim expatriates holding a liquor-consuming ration cards.
Each expatriate will be allowed five bottles of liquor or 100 bottles of beer per month at government regulated stores. Any Muslim caught buying or consuming alcohol will face stiff penalties.

A diétás (természetesesn alkoholmentes) sör nem számit jónak. Ugyanakkor vannak kellemes pillanatok is amikor a mélyhütöben ilyen vidám kép fogad. Kuvaitban az 1millió állampolgárra jut 1millió vendégmunkás. Indiaiak nagy számban képviseltetik magukat. (900e ha-ha-ha!) Sokan vannak. Nekem is van egy pár közvetlen kollégám az irodában, illetve a munka fizikai részét a terepen is csak indiaiakkal végeztetjük. Ez kölön megérne egy hosszabb kifejtést de csak pár képet tettem fel a MÁS mappába. Sokat átadnak az érzésből amikor ott állsz a tömegben, a legkülönbözőbb szagokban, csupa 1.6 magas indiai férfival körülvéve.... Mindenesetre hálás vagyok, hogy ezt is láthattam. Ez az elsö frissités az 2006-ban igy került fel egy-két kép amiket mostanában löttem, ajánlom figyelmbe az elektromos radiátorrol készültet ami jol jellemzi az éppen aktuális idöjárást errefelé.
